Lincoln grew up in a poor family and had little formal education, but he was a gifted speaker and became involved in politics at a young age. He was elected to the Illinois state legislature in 1834 and served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1847 to 1849.
In 1860, Lincoln was elected president, defeating three other candidates. His victory was seen as a triumph for the anti-slavery movement, which had been gaining momentum in the years leading up to the election.
