Mahatma Gandhi, also known as “The Father of the Nation,” was a political leader, lawyer, and social activist from India who played a key role in India’s struggle for independence from British rule. He advocated for non-violent civil disobedience and was a major influence on the Indian independence movement.
Gandhi was born in 1869 in British-ruled India and trained as a lawyer in Britain. He returned to India in 1915 and quickly became involved in the Indian nationalist movement. He believed in using non-violent resistance to achieve political goals and this philosophy became a defining aspect of his leadership.
Gandhi’s most famous campaign was the Salt March in 1930, where he led thousands of Indians on a march to the sea to protest a British tax on salt. The march was a major success and helped to bring international attention to the Indian independence movement.
Gandhi’s non-violent approach to civil disobedience inspired civil rights and freedom movements around the world, including the American Civil Rights Movement, led by Martin Luther King Jr.
Gandhi was assassinated in 1948 by a nationalist who opposed his policies of tolerance towards Muslims. His death was deeply mourned in India and around the world. His legacy continues to inspire movements for civil rights and freedom today.
